Hirtshals port and check-in for the Stavanger ferry

The terminal, the check-in deadlines for an evening departure, and what to do with the hours before you board.

Checked

Hirtshals is on the northern tip of Jutland and is built around its harbour. Fjord Line sails from the same port as the shorter crossings to Kristiansand and Larvik, from its own terminal.

The evening departure changes how the day works. On a route that sails at 20:00 you are not racing a morning deadline; you are filling an afternoon.

The terminal

Fjord Line sails from Nordsøterminalen, Containerkajen 4, 9850 Hirtshals. That is a different terminal from the Color Line one, on the same harbour. Hirtshals is north Jutland’s largest ferry port and has several terminals plus a large fishing harbour, so follow the signs for Fjord Line rather than the town name alone.

The 35 to 40 min walk into town matters more than it sounds. If you are a foot passenger with an afternoon to fill, that is an hour and a half of walking there and back, and it is worth knowing before you decide to leave the terminal.

Check-in, in order

  1. 2 hrs before: check-in opens

The earliest you can join the boarding lanes. In July and August, arriving close to this time is advisable.

  2. 60 min before: recommended arrival

Fjord Line's stated minimum, for foot passengers as well as vehicles.

  3. approx. 30 min before: boarding closes

After this, Fjord Line's rebooking terms apply.

  4. Cabin keys are issued on board

You collect them after boarding rather than at check-in, so there is no need to arrive earlier for the berth.

Bring a passport or national photo ID for everyone travelling. The ticket office keeps limited hours built around the sailing, roughly late morning and again in the late afternoon, so arriving outside those windows means an empty desk.

Fuel

Fuel is cheaper in Denmark than in Norway, so filling up before boarding is worth doing. The filling stations are on the approach into town rather than at the terminal, so stop before turning into the port.

On the return leg the same rule applies in reverse: it is generally cheaper to fill up after arriving back in Hirtshals.

Parking

Spaces immediately at the terminal are limited, so leaving a car in Denmark for a week takes a little planning. Two options, both off the terminal itself:

WhereRateDistance to Fjord LineBooking
Hotel SkagaDKK 75 per day, DKK 300 per weekapprox. 3 kmNo advance booking, first come
Hirtshals Transport CenterPre-paid, rate set at booking2 to 3 kmBook ahead through shop2go.dk

Neither is walking distance with luggage. A local taxi covers the last stretch; Taxi24Nord is the usual number in Hirtshals.

Rates were checked in August 2026 and are set by the operators, not by Fjord Line.

Filling the afternoon

An evening sailing leaves most of the day free. Hirtshals is small, and an hour or two covers it.

The North Sea Oceanarium is the main attraction and takes an hour or two, which suits families breaking a long drive. There is also the lighthouse, the wartime bunker museum in the dunes and the working fishing harbour.

The town centre is a 5 min drive and has supermarkets and a few places to eat. Buying food before boarding is worth considering: there are restaurants on board, all charged separately from the ticket, and the buffet is busiest immediately after departure.

Staying the night before

Most travellers reach Hirtshals the same day, because the sailing is in the evening. On a drive of more than about 6 hrs, an overnight stop still splits the journey.

  • Hirtshals itself. Walking distance from the terminal. The town is small and rooms are limited in summer.
  • Aalborg, about 1 hr south. Considerably more choice of hotels and restaurants, and a 58 km drive north the next day.

Arriving without a car

Trains reach Hirtshals on the Hirtshalsbanen, the 13 km branch line from Hjørring on the main Jutland route.

Buses also run between Aalborg and Hirtshals. Timetables for both are on rejseplanen.dk.

This route is one of the few Norway crossings that works without a car, because Kolumbus bus 2 meets you at the other end. See Stavanger port.

Questions people ask

What time should I arrive at Hirtshals for the Stavanger ferry?

Check-in opens about 2 hrs before departure and Fjord Line asks all guests to arrive at least 60 min before. For a 20:00 sailing that means being at the terminal by 19:00.

Is there parking at Hirtshals for foot passengers?

Yes, there is parking at the port for passengers travelling without a vehicle. Rates are charged per day.

Should I fill up in Denmark or Norway?

In Denmark. Fuel is more expensive in Norway, so filling up before boarding is usually cheaper. The filling stations are on the approach into town, not at the terminal.

Is there anything to do in Hirtshals before an evening sailing?

The North Sea Oceanarium is the main attraction and takes an hour or two. There is also the lighthouse, the bunker museum in the dunes and the working fishing harbour.

Do I need to stay overnight before the crossing?

Not usually. The sailing leaves in the evening, so most travellers reach Hirtshals the same day. An overnight stop makes sense if the drive is over about 6 hrs.
